TKD VS. Other Arts

Postby Huggy!! on Sat Jan 26, 2008 10:55 pm

It seems to me that TKD is really slagged off by a lot of other martial artists. You can't go to the bottom of a youtube tkd video without a bunch of derogotory comments, or a martial arts forum which doesn't have its own topic about how innefective tkd is.

I don't think I've met many other martial artists who can respect and appreciate what we do. They justify their views usually by stating how badly we do in the UFC, and K1. The reason for this though, is because when you've got gloves on you can take a lot more hits than you can without them. TKD is equipped to deal with a situation quickly, not go on for five minutes in a ring crawling around with other men on the floor

I just thought it'd be interesting to hear other peoples views on why tkd is so degraded in the MA community.

I agree with you, it just seems because MMA and K1 are popular at the moment that everyone thinks that it is the best. I believe that each martial art has its pros and cons and I don't really think that you can say that one is better than the others, it all depends on what suits you and your style. I have tried Judo in the past and I wasn't keen on getting thrown all over the place - also the instructor at the time wasn't sympathetic and tended to be a bit of a bully.

Times will change when the Karate Kid movies first came out everyone wanted to do Karate and that was the best thing around (according to the practitioners) the same with Enter the Dragon - Kung Fu was the best martial art. Its an on going argument that I don't think will ever be solved - unfortunately there are alot of people who believe that just because something is the 'in thing' then it is the best!

But most of those people are morons who have no true understanding of the art.
Also, another thing that'll affect someone's view an a martial art is if they'v tried it and just had a bad instuctor, therefore developing negativity for that art; meaning that they'll always leave negative comments. Fortunately, we don't have that problem cause all our instructors rock!!!

You're right the few spoil it for the many - glad to know we rock!
